The history of the Banca della Campania

The Banca della Campania began in 2003 with the merger of the Banca Popolare dell’Irpinia and the Banca Popolare di Salerno, both members of the Banca Popolare dell’Emilia Romagna Group. In December 2006 it moved into the neighbouring region of Puglia, acquiring the Banca del Monte di Foggia. Its Registered Office is in Naples, and its Head Office in Avellino.

Banca Popolare dell’Irpinia
The Banca Popolare dell’Irpinia was set up in December 1949 as a venture by various businesses in the province of Avellino. Under a series of expansion plans it grew and established branches in the bigger towns of Campania and other regions.

Banca Popolare di Salerno
The Banca Popolare di Salerno was founded in 1957 as the “Banca Popolare San Matteo”. The connection with Salerno’s patron saint illustrated the founders’ intention of establishing a strong link with the local area, supporting the province’s households and business ventures. In 1987 the Banca changed its name to the present “Banca Popolare di Salerno”.

Banca del Monte di Foggia
The Banca del Monte di Foggia “Domenico Siniscalco-Ceci” traces its origins back to the religious pawn broking institution of Pio Monte di Santa Maria della Pietà, established as a charity with royal approval on 26 April 1588. The institution’s primary business was with the poor of the district, who could pawn modest items for loans; later it widened the scope of its activities to include other transactions such as mortgages, unsecured loans, personal loans, and so on. It continued to develop, adding new services until it was acting as a fully-fledged bank.
The Banca del Monte di Foggia “Domenico Siniscalco-Ceci” Monte di Credito su Pegno sold its banking arm to the Banca del Monte di Foggia SpA on 19 December 1994, and at the same time set up the "Fondazione Banca del Monte Domenico Siniscalco Ceci", which still carries on its charitable activities in and around Foggia. The Bank joined the BPER Group in April 1997.
