The Banca Popolare di Lanciano e Sulmona traces its origins back to the Banca Popolare di Lanciano, founded in 1962 by Senator Prof. Vincenzo Bellisario, among others.
On 13 April 1991 the Banca Popolare di Lanciano merged with BAIS Scrl, the Banca Agricola Industriale di Sulmona, a lending institution with a hundred-year history which had operated in the district of the Peligna valley since 1885. This was the origin of the Banca Popolare di Lanciano e Sulmona Scrl (BPLS).
In 1995 BPLS became part of the BPER Group, after being converted to a joint stock company (SpA).
Its territorial expansion has continued since then, partly through the acquisition of small local banks: the Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Villamagna (1996), the Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Avezzano (2000) and the Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Castel Frentano (2000)
