What is now Banca di Sassari SpA was founded on 15 March 1888 in Sassari under the name “Banca Cooperativa fra Commercianti Società Anonima”. In 1925 it became the Banca Popolare Cooperativa Anonima di Sassari, and on 2 May 1948 the limited-liability co-operative “Banca Popolare di Sassari Scarl”.
Meanwhile the bank had been continuing to develop its network, opening new branches and growing considerably as its local staff expanded from five in 1948 to 34 at the end of the 1980s.
In the October 1991 the bank went into receivership, emerging on 3 June 1993 as a new joint-stock company, Banca di Sassari SpA, belonging to the Banco di Sardegna group.
For the next five years its business grew as it concentrated on innovative sectors – electronic cash and payment services – and became the leading regional provider of POS services. It was also the first agent bank in Italy for the Western Union Money Transfer service providing real-time money transfers anywhere in the world.
In 2001 Banca di Sassari along with its parent company, Banco di Sardegna, became part of the BPER Group.
In 2004 the Banca Sassari set up its Consumer Division, a product factory for the entire BPER Group providing personal loans and e-cash solutions.
