History of Banca di Sassari

The current Banca di Sassari S.p.A. was established in Sassari on 15 March 1888, with the name Banca Cooperativa fra Commercianti Società Anonima. In 1925 the Bank changed its name to Popolare Cooperativa Anonima di Sassari. On 2 May 1948, the Bank took the name "Banca Popolare di Sassari" Società Cooperativa a Responsabilità Limitata.

In the meantime, the Bank continued to expand its network, opened new branches and a new organization, with a presence on the territory increasing from 5 (1948) to 34 units (end of the 80’s).

In October 1991, the Bank was placed under temporary receivership. On 3 June 1993, a new legal entity was established: BANCA DI SASSARI S.p.A., member of the Banco di Sardegna Group.

This was followed by five years of development of the Bank operations, which were focused on the innovative sectors of e-money and payment services, seeing the Bank become a leader in the POS segment in the region. The Bank was also the first agent bank in Italy for the "Western Union - Money Transfer" service, which transfers money throughout the world in real time.

In 2001 Banca di Sassari joined the BPER Group, as a result of its parent company Banco di Sardegna joining the group.

In 2004, a Consumer Division was established within Banca Sassari, as the product unit for the entire BPER Group, providing personal credit and e-money services.
